Toxins enter the body through inhalation, skin absorption and ingestion.  Some toxins we are involuntarily exposed to, while some of them we voluntarily expose ourselves to day after day including household cleaning products and detergents along with body care products such as shampoos, soaps, lotions, sprays and the like.  Infants and young children breathe more rapidly than adults and this means a proportionately greater exposure to air pollutants and other toxins.

The article "Dangerous Chemicals in Personal Care Products Compromise Health" at www.newstarget.com recently stated that:

The average American household is a toxic chemical dump. People have antimicrobial soaps, dryer sheets with toxic chemicals, and then there are people using all sorts of personal perfumes and fragrance products that are also loaded with cancer-causing chemicals. You've got people putting deodorant in their armpits, and that deodorant contains aluminum which promotes dementia and Alzheimer's disease. And if that's not enough toxicity, you can buy air fresheners that will release a mist of toxic chemicals into the very air that you breathe so that you can inhale carcinogenic chemicals directly into your lungs. Beyond all that, we have the shampoos which are also loaded with all sorts of toxic chemicals, and we have the cleaning products that contain solvents which directly promote cancer as well as birth defects.  And this isn't even to mention the food supply yet, because the food supply in the average American household contains yet more toxic chemicals.

How Can You Lessen the Toxic Burden on Your Body

One simple way is choosing not to expose oneself to toxins that can voluntarily be avoided. We are in control of what we wash our hair with or rub on your skin.

  • Is it worth it to you to expose yourself to harmful toxins and chemicals on a daily basis that could be avoided?

  • Is it worth the potential to compromise your health and well being to save a few dollars today when you buy synthetic body care products?

These selections are free of many toxins, as well as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate found in many natural products.  The Journal of the American College of Toxicology notes that this ingredient has a "degenerative effect on the cell membranes because of its protein denaturing properties." What's more, the journal adds, "high levels of skin penetration may occur at even low use concentration."

Keep in mind that body care is big business and they are not interested in your health, but usually only their bottom line!  North Americans spend $154 per year per capita on cosmetics. The personal care industry in the US is about a $30 billion a year business. Of the $6.25 billion spent on cosmetics alone in this country in 2000, $190 million was for natural and organic products. More Information and Resources:
Natural does not necessarily mean organic, and organic does not necessarily mean free of toxins - the skin care industry does not have to follow the same regulations as the food industry and many companies cut corners on their products and still claim they are "natural." Our advice to consumers, from this point forward, is to look for personal care products that carry the USDA Organic Seal. As with food products, this is now the best way for consumers to be able to distinguish true organic products with the highest percentage of organic ingredients from those products with lower organic ingredient content and/or those containing any range of synthetic ingredients.

USDA Organic SealThere are still no regulations that keep unethical body care companies from making fraudulent "organic" labeling claims outside of the USDA organic certification process. In other words, the National Organic Program will only be regulating products that meet the stringent standards that allow them to carry the "USDA Certified Organic" symbol. As a consumer, if you purchase a body care product that claims to be organic but does not have the USDA certified organic symbol, you have no way of knowing how much (or how little) organic content that product actually has . The OCA will continue to fight to stop mislabeling outside of the NOP. In the meantime, look for the "USDA Organic" symbol.
