Soy - Maybe it's not so good after all...

Soy can be found in countless products at the grocery store and is touted to be the ultimate health food. Used as a meat replacer and a milk replacer without the so-called negative aspects of meat and milk.  It turns out, soy may not be such a "miracle food" after all.  Here are just some of the pitfalls of soy:

- Soy has been found to be a goitrogen, blocking thyroid function

- Soy has extremely high amounts of phytic acid, known to block mineral absorption (calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc to name a few!)

- The phytoestrogens may disrupt endocrine function

- Free glutamic acid or MSG (a neurotoxin) is formed during soy food processing and added to many soy foods

- Soy is an extremely high allergen (one of the top eight)

In addition, the FDA gave soy a cholesterol-lowering blessing on the basis of incomplete science and even though there was a lot pointing to the fact that soy can be toxic.  Now even the American Heart Association has come out with a scientific statement on January 17, 2006, saying that "Soy shows little effect on "bad" cholesterol."
