October 2005

This Month's Step to Well Be-ing

Suggestion:  Avoid Genetically Modified Foods and Products

Ideas for implementation

  • Become familiar with crops, foods and food ingredients that have been genetically modified (See Summary of GM food sources)
  • Shop for brands that do not contain genetically modified ingredients (See Shopping Guide of Non-GM foods)
  • In restaurants avoid things cooked in vegetable oils such as canola and soy oils (ask for pure olive oil only), avoid dairy items and ask for the foods that are freshly prepared and not from packages. (See Eating Non-GM in Restaurants
  • Buy organic produce and products (See September issue - Where to buy Organics)
  • Look at labels - all produce has codes on them and if there are 4 digits beginning with a 4 -  it is said to be conventional, if there are 5 digits beginning with a 9 - it is said to be organic, and if there are 5 digits beginning with an 8 - it is said to be genetically modified.
